How It Works

The Leih Lines is designed to be a cozy, friendly, low-stakes environment for casual, beginner friendly RP. While we are happy to serve up high-quality ingame items and receive as much money as you'd like to throw at us, we want you to feel welcome to spend the whole evening with us without spending a single gil.To that end, we have invented mana gems! Mana gems are a roleplay-only (read: pretend) currency for use exclusively at The Lines! They manifest as little blue and purple glowing, flower-shaped crystals, they are useful to mages, and Leih'li loves 'em!How many mana gems do you have? As many as you like! How do you get more? Just say that you have more! You're never out of money at The Leih Lines! (Unless, of course, you want to be. That's your perogative!)

Never roleplayed? Weird cousin Leih'li is here to help!

What even is roleplaying, anyway?

Roleplaying is the act of, well, playing a role! Getting together with friends or strangers and pretending to be someone or something else is a pastime as old as "thinking" and "talking." In fact, you've almost assuredly done it before- it's not much different from how kids tend to play.

Are there rules?

Sometimes! Roleplaying can be a freeform writing exercise of people just making stuff up, but it can also be a complicated board game-esque experience like in Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and similar Tabletop RPGs. At The Leih Lines, we don't have many rules, just suggestions! All the rules we do have are accessible by clicking the Rules button on the menu tab to the left.

So what do I actually do, though?

Use the ingame chat and emote functions to play as your own character! Say things that they would say, do things that they would do, and react to situations how they would react! There's not likely to be a lot of dramatic conflict at The Leih Lines, but your character has probably been through quite a lot. Therefore, they likely have a story to tell!

My character? The one with my username? The Warrior of Light? That one?

Kinda! You're welcome to go by a different name at The Lines, especially if your ingame name is something silly or non-canon. You are equally welcome to go by whatever name you use ingame- Silly Beef and Swole McGrohl are totally fine.However, there is a bit of a problem with being the Warrior of Light. Because the story only features one Warrior of Light, we can't ALL be that Warrior! Most Final Fantasy XIV roleplayers tend to have two versions of their character's story: one where they are the Warrior of Light, and one where they aren't.For the sake of convenience and not asking too many hard questions, it's easiest if your character at The Leih Lines is not particularly close to the Warrior of Light. Maybe they've seen or interacted with them once or twice!

How do I come up with a character?

Because of how Final Fantasy XIV works, you already have the physical appearance part handled! Think about where your character might have come from- are they from a big city like Ul'Dah, or a small village like Quarrymill? Who are their family and friends? What do they do for a living? What is their personality like?If you're drawing a blank on inventing a personality for your character, here's a trick I like to use. Start with yourself, and change one or two things. Maybe you are able to laugh off a joke. Would a more hotheaded version of yourself take the same joke the same way?Your character doesn't need to have a long, complicated backstory with a giant profile sheet. You can just start with a few details, and answer questions as they come up. If someone asks you a question you don't have an answer for, you get to invent a new aspect of your character on the spot!

I'm not sure that I know enough about Final Fantasy lore to do this.

Roleplaying at The Leih Lines isn't a lore trivia quiz! Use what you know from quests and cutscenes in the game, and maybe do a Google search or check the FFXIV Fandom wiki if you want specifics details. When in doubt, or if it's taking too long- just make something up! You can never "get it wrong", and you can always change it later!

Wait... I thought that roleplaying was something naughty.

Roleplay with adult themes does exist, and you can find it in certain places in Final Fantasy XIV. However, there is no adult-themed roleplay at The Leih Lines. We want a safe, comfortable place for all kinds of characters to come together and have a nice meal, a fine drink, a hot bath, and an overall pleasant evening.

I think I get it, but I'm not sure how to start.

Just walk on into The Leih Lines and have a seat anywhere you like! Roleplaying Commands

Most roleplay in Final Fantasy XIV uses a few basic commands and chat channels./say- This is the most basic way of chatting within the venue. We'll have to do some testing, but we're fairly sure that /say chat will reach all of your current floor in the building./tell- More direct, and by default, it makes a noise! You are welcome to order in either /say or /tell, your preference!Party chat- This is less commonly used, but it's a decent way of keeping a private conversation between a few people from getting lost in the shuffle!Emotes- FFXIV has loads of built-in emotes and expressions that make your character move and react ingame! See a list of emotes here, an emote guide here, and a list of useful text commands here/em- Need to do a specific action that the ingame emotes don't cover? Type /em, and the text that follows will appear in the same manner that the ingame emote text does./random- Generates a random number. Used for various games!

Tips and Standards

-Want to specify that something you're saying is Out Of Character (OOC)? Use double slashes // or double parentheses ((.-For consistency's sake, we prefer to keep things in the present tense at The Leih Lines. So, John steps up to the bar and orders a drink instead of John stepped up to the bar and ordered a drink.-Made a whoopsie and need to take something back? Just say it in OOC! For example-
//Whoops! John didn't actually step up to the bar because the bar is currently on fire.-Have fun! This isn't a creative writing class, lore trivia quiz, or grammar school. We're not grading your roleplay! Just do your best with the writing and enjoy yourself!

IC Rules

- Please keep your clothing on! Smallclothes are allowed in the tub area ONLY, though swimsuits are preferred.
- Do not play instruments without first asking the staff.
- If a dispute arises, resolve it quickly, quietly, and civilly. Fighting is not allowed on the premises— take it to Wolves' Den Pier.
- Keep your drinking to a reasonable level! Guests who are drunk enough to disturb other patrons or pass out will be escorted out of the pub.

OOC Rules

- All players and characters must be 18 years of age or older. No exceptions.
- The Leih Lines is a Safe For Work environment. No lewd RP is permitted on the premises.
- If you are asked to stop doing a thing by staff or another patron, stop immediately.
- Do not harass other patrons, OOC or IC. We are here to have fun. Players are not their characters.
- Please keep weapons and minions put away unless serving an RP purpose.
- Please raise any and all concerns with the staff.

A young Miqo'te mage with a grin, a dream, and a way-too-overzealous personality. Constantly on the go, Leih'li has dined, drunk, and lodged at every kind of establishment under the sun! He decided to combine the best features of his favorite traveling stops, and The Leih Lines were born!
